The Fastest Way of Making Iced Green Tea

There are numerous ways and suggestions for brewing the perfect cup of iced green tea. If you are not the biggest fan of sugary mass-market products, you might already know all the tips & trick for making the best home-made iced green tea. But, do you know which is the fastest way?

Slow vs. Fast Preparation

The slow way includes using lukewarm water and brewing tea leaves in the fridge overnight, or at least for 3-4 hours. Slow brew will have a very different flavor profile from the regular cup of tea. Unless you leave it for too long, it will never acquire bitter notes, but leaves will need quite a lot of time to release all healthy compounds and flavor. Even though the slow method is perfect for making iced green tea, it will never give such good results with black tea leaves. Plus, the longer you leave it in the fridge, the less fresh it will be and it will start losing antioxidants.

The Fastest Way of Making Iced Green Tea

I always wondered what is the purpose of buying 20 kilo of ice at once, until I discovered a shaker can be used for making iced green tea as well, not only for cocktails. I used to make it using the slow method, or simply cooling the tea in fridge overnight. However, fast method has many advantages: you will always drink the freshest iced green tea possible, it will be done in maximum 5 minutes, and you can create hundreds of flavors.

Important Utensils

You will be needing a proper shaker, strainer and your usual gaiwan or a teapot (150-200 ml). Use any loose leaf tea you want, but keep in mind that some green teas can get more bitter. If you need or prefer any sweetener you can use stevia, honey, maple syrup, or even different fruit syrups. The best way is to first add any sweeteners into the shaker and then fill it with ice. Use teapot to make a regular cup of tea and add any dried fruits, herbs, spices or flowers if you want an extra flavor. Use just a bit more tea leaves and steep for 1-3 minutes. Keep the water temperature between 75-85 degrees. Then pour the tea into the shaker using the strainer. Close and shake vigorously for about one 30-60 seconds.
