Cannabis has always been a popular plant. It is mostly used as a recreational drug due to THC, a psychoactive compound that gives a feeling of being “high”. Unlike THC, CBD derived from cannabis cannot cause that feeling. Instead, it offers a solution for people suffering from epilepsy, insomnia and chronic pain. The best way to take it? By making a CBD oil tea.
What is CBD oil?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of the non-psychoactive compounds found in cannabis. Medical CBD oil is derived from marijuana and commercially available CBD oils come from hemp. Because both marijuana and hemp belong to cannabis family, they will give the same CBD oil. The difference lies in THC content. Hemp naturally has less than 0.3% of THC. Therefore, the purpose of CBD oil is not to get you high, but to enjoy many health benefits. Do not confuse CBD oil with regular hemp oil. Hemp oil is made from the seeds, rather than stalks, leaves and flowers, which contain a different level of compounds including CBD.[1]
Is CBD legal?
Supplements and oils derived from hemp are legally available in many places. Currently, only three states have restrictions on any cannabis plant including hemp. Both hemp and marijuana are legal to use for both medical and recreational purposes in ten states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.[2] Hemp products, in order to be legal, must contain less than 0.3% of THC.
What are the benefits?
The biggest benefits of CBD might be dealing with epilepsy. Next, CBD is often used for treating anxiety, inflammation, chronic pain, and insomnia. It’s also used to treat migraines and headaches, different neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease and diabetes, CBD can cause some side effects too, like nausea, fatigue and irritability. [3]
What is CBD oil tea?
Although CBD tea is actually available on the market in loose leaf form, the best way to consume it would by adding CBD oil to regular tea. CBD oils have different levels of CBD, from 2% or less, up to 30% in premium oils. When buying a CBD oil, always pay attention to the size of the bottle and the total amount of CBD. Some sources recommend starting with a very low dose if you are not used to cannabis products and increase the dose later. For instance, treating insomnia might require a lower dose than treating epilepsy. For an average person, 20mg might be enough to experience moderate effects.[4] But there is no need to take too much it either. “While CBD has no known adverse effects at any dose, an excessive amount of CBD may be less effective therapeutically than a moderate dose.[5]”
How to make a CBD oil tea?
CBD oil tea can be made with any tea, but the best choice would be to use loose leaf tea that goes well with milk. CBD is fat soluble, rather than water soluble, so adding a fatty acid is recommended to increase the bioavailability. Bring water to a boil, let it cool down for a few seconds and brew 1-2 teaspoons of tea in 200-300 ml of water. Add milk, or better, frothed milk and CBD oil. Alternative option is to make a bulletproof tea with CBD oil.
A final thought
Just as with loose leaf tea, it’s important to know where your CBD oil is coming from. A recent article suggests that the “published data from around the world has taught us that misleading labels as well as harmful contaminants are real and actual problems for CBD products.[6]”
