The East African Tea Trade Association is placing a new tax on tea starting Monday. This new levy is based on a percentage of total cost instead of based on weight. Since higher quality teas come with a higher price tag, the tax will actually hit the better quality produce. This will quickly make it advantageous for the Kenya tea farmers to focus their efforts on lesser quality teas. This is bad news for the Africa tea world.
